Pomp & Splendor At The Spelling Bee Championship

The much awaited part 2 of the 2021 Kenya National Spelling Bee Championship went down last weekend at the Westgate Shopping Mall Nairobi. Ninety five,95, spellers drawn from schools around Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado and Murang’a met to pit their spelling skills and covet the title of the Spelling Bee Champion.

In front of a live audience, the spellers gallantly took the stage one by one tackling every word hurled their way by the judges.

An audience comprising of parents, teachers and even siblings to the spellers were treated to a spectacular show of wits and brains as each round brought more challenge words and each speller became more competitive. By round 3, only eleven,11, spellers remained.

The competition entered a cut-throat race when two-times KNSB champion and finalist of the first part of the 2021 KNSB championship Inaara Ruqaiya, 9, from Consolata School Nairobi faced two equally sturdy competitors, Renee Wairimu, 12, from Elimu House School Nairobi and Mary Wanjiku, 10, from Sunrise of Africa School Nairobi.

The trio dominated the stage for close to 50 minutes, each vanquishing words given to them by the judges. In the end, Ruqaiya spelt nonchalance, (the state or quality of being cool, indifferent or lack of concern), correctly.
