More than three hundred and fifty learners from across Nairobi brave the chilly Saturday morning at The Nairobi Primary School, each praying and hoping to clinch the much-coveted County Champion title in this year’s Spelling Bee championships, . The learners are not alone. Parents and teachers accompanying them flock the venue to witness these little ones battle it out in the largest spelling contest in the country.

The event is simultaneously being carried across forty other counties in the country with more than five thousand learners competing for a slot at the Nationals.

We meet up with Messy Tracy, a pupil at Ngei Primary School who registered as an individual candidate and she expresses he delight in being part of this year’s championship. ”It is my very first time participating in a Spelling Bee contest and I can’t wait to meet the other contestants,” says Tracy who is accompanied by her mother Naomi.

A 26 seater school bus, laptops, cash prizes and loads of gift hampers are up for grabs in this year’s Championships; and clearly every speller participating is eyeing these golden rewards.
